Purpose of the Study

The lack of preparedness of local governments and energy companies led to this serious state-wide power outage and energy crisis. Therefore, to prevent similar series of disasters from happening, it is crucial to ensure and assess the resiliency and integrity of current transmission pipelines in the State of Texas.

In this project, the main objective here is to investigate and determine the driving factors of pipeline incidents (failures, accidents) of transmission pipelines.

Study Area

As mentioned previously, Houston, the largest city in Texas, was the epicentre of the energy crisis, and both the city and local residents were severely impacted. Thus, the County of Harris (where Houston is the county seat) is selected to be the study area here.

Objectives

The study is composed of two major sections:

  1. Analyzing the influence of physical factors on transmission pipelines

    • Explore the effects of soil corrosivity on pipelines

  2. Analyzing the influence of demographic on transmission pipelines

    • Investigate possible relationships between pipeline incidents with demographic factors
